Asymptotic Conditional Probability in Modal Logic: A Probabilistic Reconstruction of Nonmonotonic Logic

چکیده
We analyze the asymptotic conditional validity of modal formulas, i.e., the probability that a formula ψ is valid in the finite Kripke structures in which a given modal formula φ is valid, when the size of these Kripke structures grows to infinity. We characterize the formulas ψ that are almost surely valid (i.e., with probability 1) in case φ is a flat, S5consistent formula, and show that these formulas ψ are exactly those which follow from φ according to the nonmonotonic modal logic S5G. Our results provide – for the first time – a probabilistic semantics to a well-known nonmonotonic modal logic, establishing a new bridge between nonmonotonic and probabilistic reasoning, and give a computational account of the asymptotic conditional validity problem in Kripke structures.

Coherent Conditional Probability in a Fuzzy Logic Setting
Very recently, a (fuzzy modal) logic to reason about coherent conditional probability, in the sense of de Finetti, has been introduced by the authors. Under this approach, a conditional probability ð j Þ is taken as a primitive notion defined over conditional events of the form ‘‘’ given ’’, ’j for short, where is not the impossible event. The logic, called FCP(L ), exploits an idea already use...

متن کاملOn the Logic of Nonmonotonic Conditionals and Conditional Probabilities: Predicate Logic
In a previous paper I described a range of nonmonotonic conditionals that behave like conditional probability functions at various levels of probabilistic support. These conditionals were defined as semantic relations on an object language for sentential logic. In this paper I extend the most prominent family of these conditionals to a language for predicate logic. My approach to quantifiers is...
متن کاملNonmonotonic Modes of Inference
In this paper we investigate nonmonotonic ‘modes of inference’. Our approach uses modal (conditional) logic to establish a uniform framework in which to study nonmonotonic consequence. We consider a particular mode of inference which employs a majority-based account of default reasoning—one which differs from the more familiar preferential accounts—and show how modal logic supplies a framework ...
متن کاملConditional Objects as Nonmonotonic Consequence Relationships
This paper is an investigation of the relationship between conditional objects obtained as a qualitative counterpart to conditional probabilities, and nonmonotonic reasoning. Roughly speaking, a conditional object can be seen as a generic rule which allows us to get a conclusion provided that the available information exactly corresponds to the "context" part of the conditional object. This giv...
